The following information is offered by George C Baxley:
36 different birds depicted on 43 pages (21 1/2 folded pages) of color woodblocks (7 illustrations span two adjoining pages while 29 are single page). There are an additional 5 pages with Japanese text only (includes inside the covers). In total 48 pages or 23 folded pages and two single pages. The front Japanese text page, which is attached to the cover, is actually a double fold page but the back side of the page is attached to the paper cover. There is printing on the side attached to the cover.

Condition: rare, 1881, intact book of well-printed original wookblock colour prints. The book is in good condition with virtually no spotting. It shows signs of use (i.e. bumped/”thumbed” corners, a few spots, dustiness to the cover and light staining to the upper edge) otherwise it is a good copy. There is a stamp on the inside cover “Edouard Gruss” with and interesting pasted anatomical illustration of a bird below the stamp.

The National Library of Australia offers the following information regarding this publication:
The most well-used world geography textbook in early Meiji, compiled by former Edo Government officer, Masao Uchida. He was sent to Holland from 1863 to 1866, to gather information to compile this title. This title was published in various editions over ten years and used in schools all over Japan, as well as widely read as the book of enlightenment. Condition: Extremely rare 1871 edition containing the original wrapping paper cover. The woodblock prints show signs of wear and the pages show signs of handling. There are several pages with worm holes and there is light wear to the edges of the cover but apart from these issues the book is in good condition. Condition: Although the covers are no longer attached to the book the pages are all present, in pristine condition (apart from the title page which is discoloured around its edges from the binding glue of the covers) and well bound together. The engravings are all strong impressions with fine hand-colouring (as published in 1798) and with no sign of foxing, tears or other blemishes. Condition: Rare limited edition book (no. 403 of 550) in good condition and the impressions are excellent. The cover shows surface wear and bumps but is intact (i.e. it is not split and falling apart). Nevertheless, the frontis illustration featuring a portrait of Millet is loose. There is library stamp on the inside of the front cover. There is also minor scattered spotting and the final etching has a stain. This is an extremely rare hardback, ex-library book (the cancelled/withdrawn stamp is on a library plate attached to the inside of the front cover) with the usual stamps, marks and removed dust cover. The book is in a used but excellent condition. It appears very little used and it has quite possibly spent its life as library reserve stock.
The reproductions (i.e. not original etchings) of Strutt’s prints are laminated within impressed plate marks.

The Childhood Etchings of Sir Edwin Landseer R.A.
(Six original etchings by Landseer)
Produced by Iain Bain at the John Boydell Press, Bristol, for The Heritage Collection, 1974
This solander folio of prints is number 11 in a rare limited edition 80 of which 75 were for sale. The folio consists of introduction to the Landseer’s early prints and a collection of five original prints taken from Landseer’s plates with an additional sixth print from a plate of “hitherto unpublished studies … discovered under a crust of old printing ink on the reverse of the plate carrying Landseer’s earliest work (No. 1 in the set).”

Also included in this folio of original etchings by Landseer is promotional documentation and the original purchase receipt (GBP88 at the time of publication in 1974).


Condition: Superb condition with only the folio boards show light signs of use/aging. The prints are in perfect condition (i.e. no stains, foxing or handling marks). I am selling this folio for a total cost of $350 AUD including postage and handling to anywhere in the world.

Sadly I purchased this copy by mistake as I already had this particular volume. Consequently, I am now selling it. Note that his volume is bound in red buckram rather than the usual brown of the Bartsch volumes.

This is a scarce, first edition, hardcover novel created entirely of more than 100 woodcut images.  “Lynd Kendall Ward (June 26, 1905 – June 28, 1985) was an American artist and storyteller, known for his series of wordless novels using wood engraving, and his illustrations for juvenile and adult books.
