Utagawa (aka Ando) Hiroshige (歌川 広重) (1797–1858)
Whirlpools on a Rocky Coast (or Landscape with the Whirlpools at Awa)
From an untitled series of triptychs published by Okazawaya Taheiji, 1857
Inscribed: (left panel) Hiroshige hitsu (seal) Tōto Ikka;
(lower right on each panel) mark of the publisher Okazawaya Taheiji
This set of prints does not have the censor seals and date printed in the sky.
I am not an authority on Japanese prints and consequently I am very interested in expert advice from readers concerning these prints. Certainly this is not one of the first impressions as the fine line denoting the horizon line shown on the right panel in extremely rare early impressions is not evident.
