Jacques Callot, “Adoration of the Kings”, c.1631

Jacques Callot (1592–1635)

“Adoration of the Kings” (Lieure title) (aka “Adoration of the Magi” [NGA title]), c. 1631. This exquisite etching depicts the biblical scene with Joseph standing behind the Virgin Mary who is seated on the left, holding the infant Jesus, while the Three Wise Men present their gifts on the right. Part of Callot’s series “Mysteries of the Passion, it has been trimmed from a larger composition featuring three oval and three round images (see Lieure 687–692).

Etching on fine laid paper.

Condition: a well-printed impression with small margins. The sheet is in excellent condition, free from tears, holes, folds, abrasions, or significant stains. There are remnants of mounting tape on the verso.
