Jean Lepautre, “Ewer in an Octagonal Cartouche”, c.1670

Jean Lepautre (aka Jean Le Pautre; Jean Le Potre; Jean Lepotre) (1618–1682)

“Ewer in an Octagonal Cartouche” (descriptive title only) (aka “Schenkkan met naakte jongelingen” [Jug with Naked Young People] [Rijksmuseum title]), c.1670 (1664–1682), lifetime impression before numbering as plate 3 from the series of 6 etchings, “Grote Schenkkannen” (Large Jugs), before the plate was published in Paris by Pierre Mariette II (1634–1716) in the third edition with privilege from Louis XIV (King of France) (see the description of this print offered by the Rijksmuseum: http://hdl.handle.net/10934/RM0001.COLLECT.589933).

Etching on laid paper with watermark.

Size: (sheet) 37 x 27 cm; (plate) 27.9 x 22.1 cm; (image borderline) 27.4 x 21 cm.

Lettered in plate: (lower-left corner) “le Potre fecit cū privil”.

Lifetime impression before lettering with the publisher’s details for Piere Mariette II.

Orn Cat II 1945 (Peter Fuhring 2004, “Ornament Prints in the Rijksmuseum II: The Seventeenth Century”, Part 1, Amsterdam, Sound and Vision, p. 334, cat. no. 1945).

Condition: a strong and well-printed impression showing no sign of wear to the printing plate. Beyond minor handling marks in the margin corners, the sheet is in an excellent condition for its considerable age with no tears, holes, folds or significant stains.

I am selling this bizarre (at least to my eyes) etching of a richly ornamented ewer that is seemingly of monumental size set within a landscape framed as a decorative panel with an octagonal oak garland, for AU$245 (currently US$158.44/EUR148.83/GBP127.25 at the time of this listing) including postage and handling to anywhere in the world, but not (of course) any import duties/taxes imposed by some countries.

If you are interested in purchasing this simply amazing etching exemplifying the French Baroque period style, please contact me (oz_jim@printsandprinciples.com) and I will send you a PayPal invoice to make the payment easy.
