Crispijn de Passe the Elder (aka Crispin van de Passe) (1564–1637)

“Gabriel”, c1600 (c1590–1637), plate 2 from the series of nine plates, “The Archangels”,
after Maarten de Vos ((ka Marten de Vos; Maerten de Vos) (1532–1603), published by Philips Galle (aka Philippe Galle; Philippus Gallaeus) (1537–1612).

Engraving with etching on laid paper trimmed close to the platemark and backed with a support sheet.
Size: (sheet) 16.2 x 9.5 cm; (image borderline) 15 x 9.2 cm.
Inscribed on plate within the image borderline along the lower edge: (left) “M.de Vos inuent.” (centre) “Crisp. de Pas Sculp.”; (right) “Phl’s Galle excud.”
Numbered on plate below the image borderline: (left) “2”.
Lettered on plate below the image borderline in three lines of Latin: (centre) “GABRIEL. / E cælo ad Mariam Gabriel demissus, Aue, inquit, / Concipies hominem, Virgo beata, Deum.”

Condition: crisp and well-printed impression with strong contrasts, trimmed close to the platemark. The sheet is in excellent condition for its considerable age (i.e. there are no tears, holes, folds, abrasions, significant stains or foxing) backed with a support sheet of archival (millennium quality) washi paper.

I am selling this small jewel of an engraving sparkling with light and movement for AU$260 (currently US$182.09/EUR162.46/GBP139.95 at the time of posting this print) including postage and handling to anywhere in the world (but not, of course, any import duties/taxes imposed by some countries).
