Heinrich Vogtherr the Elder’s woodcut, “Divided Attack at the Bulwarks of Yrniß in Bellitz, Germany”, 1548

Heinrich Vogtherr the Elder (1490–1556)

“Divided Attack at the Bulwarks of Yrniß in Bellitz, Germany” (title based on my struggle to decipher the early German [Fraktur] text related to this image), 1548, woodcut illustration published in 1548 by Christoffel Froschouer (aka Christoph Froschauer) (c1490–1564) in Zurich in volume 3 of Johann Stumpf’s (1500–1578), “Gemeiner loblicher Eydgnoschafft Stetten, Landen vnd Völckeren Chronick wirdiger Thaaten Beschreybung: hieriñ wirt auch die Gelegenheit der gantzen Europe: item ein kurtzuer griffne Chronica Germanie oder Teütschlands: in sonders aber ein fleyssige histori vnd ordenliche Beschreybung Gallie oder Franckrychs fürgestellt: darauff deñ obgedachte der Eydgnoschafft Beschreybung volget ...”, p. 279 (unpaginated verso).

Archive.org offers an online view of this print in its context in Stumpf’s publication: https://archive.org/details/gemeinerlobliche03stum/page/n187/mode/2up.

Woodcut from two plates on laid paper trimmed around the image borderline and backed with a support sheet.

Size: (sheet/image borderline) 8.6 x 16.6 cm.

Condition: a strong and well-printed impression showing minimal wear to the printing plate with letterpress text verso, trimmed along the image borderline and laid onto a support sheet of archival (millennium quality) washi paper. The sheet is in a near pristine condition with no tears, holes, folds, abrasions, stains, foxing or signs of handling.

I am selling this fascinating two panel woodcut showing a battle—note that the two panels are reemployed for more than one battle scene using different configurations of these and other panels; see for example: https://archive.org/details/gemeinerlobliche01stum/page/n267/mode/1up—for a total cost of AU$252 (currently US$189.40/EUR172.39/GBP143.60 at the time of this listing) including Express Mail (EMS) postage and handling to anywhere in the world, but not (of course) any import duties/taxes imposed by some countries.

If you are interested in purchasing this early woodcut executed with the utmost skill, please contact me (oz_jim@printsandprinciples.com) and I will send you a PayPal invoice to make the payment easy.
