Nicolas Dorigny’s etching, “Evangelist St Matthew with Cross”, 1707, after Domenichino

Nicolas Dorigny (aka Sir Nicolas Dorigny (1658–1746)

“Evangelist St Matthew with Cross”, 1707 (as inscribed in plate but dated from 1702 by the French publisher, Mariette), after a fresco from the series “The Four Evangelists” (Matthew, Mark, Luke and John) (1622–1627) by Domenichino (aka Domenico Zampieri) (1581–1641) decorating the pendentives of the Church of Sant' Andrea della Valle, Rome (see a marvellous account and photographs of the series in Simona Albanese’s blog: http://simonaalbanese.blogspot.com/2011/02/santandrea-della-valle-domenichinos.html).

Etching with engraving on laid paper trimmed around the platemark.

Size: (sheet) 62 x 45; (image borderline) 57.8 x 44 cm.

Lettered in plate below the image borderline: (left) “Dominicus Zampieri pinx. Romæ in Ædibus Diui Andreæ/ Sup. perm. 1707.”; (centre) “Sereniss. mo Prinipi CAROLO [coat-of-arms of Charles Landgrave of Hesse-Kassel [1654 – 1730]) Landgrauio Hassiæ & c./ Humillime dedicate, et consecrate […] Obseq, et addict. Seruus Nicolaus Dorigny”; (right) “N. Dorigny Gallus delin. et incidit Romæ cum priuil. Summi Pont. et Reg. Christianis.”

IFF 90–93 (Jean Adhémar & Jacques Lethève 1954, “Inventaire du Fonds Français: Bibliothèque Nationale”, Paris, Département des Estampes, cat. nos. 90–93).

The British Museum offers the following description of this print: “St Matthew, surrounded by angels, one of them holding a cross; in pendentive. 1702/7” (https://www.britishmuseum.org/collection/object/P_1936-0810-33).

Condition: a richly inked and well-printed impression (near faultless), trimmed along the platemark. Beyond flattened folds, the sheet is in a superb/museum quality condition for its considerable age with no tears, holes, abrasions, significant stains (there is minor toning at the lower corners) or foxing.

I am selling this very large etching in remarkably good condition for its size and age, for the total cost of AU$406 (currently US$281.59/EUR268.24/GBP230.24 at the time of this listing) including postage and handling to anywhere in the world (but not, of course, any import duties/taxes imposed by some countries). Note that because of the large size of this print, it will be posted rolled in a tube.

If you are interested in purchasing this spectacular etching (with some engraving)—please contact me (oz_jim@printsandprinciples.com) and I will send you a PayPal invoice to make the payment easy.
