Jules Jacquemart, “Head of Christ”, 1876, after Leonardo da Vinci

Jules Jacquemart (aka Jules Ferdinand Jacquemart) (1837–1880)

“Head of Christ” (aka “Tête de Christ”), 1876, after Leonardo da Vinci’s (1452–1519) c.1494 chalk drawing in the Pinacoteca di Brera that is a study for “The Last Supper” in the convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie, Milan (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Head_of_Christ_(Leonardo), printed by Alfred Salmon (fl.1863–1894) and published in Paris in the art periodical, “Gazette des Beaux-Arts”, 1st February, 1876, between pages 390 and 391.

 Etching and drypoint with pale plate tone on fine laid paper backed with a support sheet.

Size: (sheet) 21 x 16.5 cm; (plate) 15.6 x 11.5 cm (image borderline) 11 x 8.5 cm.

Lettered in plate below the image borderline: (left) “Gazette des Beaux-Arts.”; (right) “Imp. A. Salmon.”

Scratch inscribed in plate below the image borderline: (centre) “Jules Jacquemart sculpt/ d’après le Desssin original de Léonard de Vinci”.

Condition: a strong and well-printed (near faultless) impression in a near pristine condition laid upon an archival support sheet of millennium quality washi paper providing wide margins.
