Jean Charles Cazin, “En Hollande”, c.1900

Jean Charles Cazin (1841–1901)

“En Hollande” (published title), c.1900, a printer’s proof before lettering for publication in the art periodical, “Revue de l’Art ancient et moderne” in 1901. Note that Leonce Benedite (Conservator of the Musée National of Luxembourg) also showcased this etching in 1902 in the article “Jean-Charles Cazin” that I understand was extracted from “Revue de l’Art ancient et moderne” (see https://archive.org/details/jeancharlescazin00bene/page/n9/mode/2up).

Etching printed in brown ink with plate tone on heavy buff-coloured washi paper with wide margins.

Size: (sheet) 47.6 x 35.8 cm; ([soft] plate) 26.5 x 18.9 cm; (image borderline) 23 x 16 cm.

Inscribed in plate with the artist’s initials: (lower left corner) “J. C. C.”

Proof state before lettering for publication.

IFF (identified but not numbered) (Jean Adhémar 1949, “Inventaire du Fonds Français après 1800: CABANE–CICÉRI”, Paris, Bibliothèque Nationale de France, Département des Estampes, vol. 4, p. 185 [https://gallica.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/bpt6k5510949t/f207].

Condition: a strong and well printed impression with generously wide margins. Beyond a mark in the margin at left, the sheet is in an excellent condition with no tears, holes, folds or significant stains.

I am selling this exceptionally rare etching for the total price of AU$246 (approximately US$163.87, EUR 139.57, or GBP 120.84), which includes worldwide express shipping. Please be aware that any applicable import duties are the buyer’s responsibility.

If you are interested in purchasing this bold and confidently executed etching—note the artist’s use of retroussage (a technique of drawing ink out of the etched lines during the printing process so that the edges of the lines appear softened) to give the linework a rich and velvety quality—please contact me (oz_jim@printsandprinciples.com) and I will send you a PayPal invoice to make the payment easy.

Note that currently mail services from Australia to the USA have been suspended. Consequently, at the moment I am unable to accept purchases needing shipping to the United States.
