Lucien Daniel Carred (fl.1873–1886)—Parisian printmaker, student of Édouard Lièvre and Léon Gaucherel, exhibited at the Salon between 1873 and 1886

“Dante et Virgile”, 1886, after Eugène Delacroix’s (1798–1863) painting, “The Barque of Dante”, 1822, in the collection of the  Musée du Louvre, Paris (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Barque_of_Dante), printed by A Clément (fl.c.1886-1892) and published in Paris in the art periodical, “L’Art”.

Etching printed in a warm black ink on chine collé on buff laid paper with partial watermark.

Size: (sheet) 28.6 x 42.1 cm; (plate) 26.7 x 34.5 cm; (image borderline) 23.1 x 30.5 cm.

Lettered in plate below the image borderline: (left) “Eugène Delacroix pinx./ L’Art”; (centre) “DANTE ET VIRGILE/ Conduits par Plégias, traversent le lac qui entoure la ville infernale de Dité.” [Dante and Virgil/ led by Plegias, they cross the lake surrounding the infernal city of Dite.]; (right) L. Carred sc./  Imp. A. Clément_Paris.”

Condition: a strong, well-printed and near faultless impression in a near pristine condition with no tears, holes, folds or significant stains (there is a small mark on the lower edge of the sheet).
