Unidentified
engraver from the circle of Marcantonio Raimondi (1470/1482–1527/1534)
“Hope”
(TIB title) (aka "Woman as personification of Hope (Spes) with bread
standing in a niche“ [Rijksmusuem title]), c.1519 (1510–27), plate 6 from the
series “The Seven Virtues”, possibly after Raphael (see Rijksmuseum https://id.rijksmuseum.nl/200123774).
Engraving
on fine laid paper trimmed around the image borderline and backed with a
support sheet.
Size:
(unevenly trimmed sheet) 21.7 x 10.6 cm
Inscribed
on plate: (lower left) “6”; (lower right) “[monogram of the artist] “MAF”.
Copy
of TIB 391 (Konrad Oberhuber [ed.] 1978, “The Illustrated Bartsch: The Works of
Marcantonio Raimondi and of his School”, vol. 27 [Part 2], New York, Abaris
Books, p. 83, cat. no. 391)
Condition:
a well-printed impression trimmed around the image borderline and laid upon an
archival support sheet of millennium quality washi paper. Beyond pale stains
(on the figure’s thigh and beside her ankle), the sheet is in a good condition
for its considerable age with no tears, holes or folds.
