Circle of Marcantonio Raimondi, “Hope”, c.1519, after Raphael

Unidentified engraver from the circle of Marcantonio Raimondi (1470/1482–1527/1534)

“Hope” (TIB title) (aka "Woman as personification of Hope (Spes) with bread standing in a niche“ [Rijksmusuem title]), c.1519 (1510–27), plate 6 from the series “The Seven Virtues”, possibly after Raphael (see Rijksmuseum https://id.rijksmuseum.nl/200123774).

Engraving on fine laid paper trimmed around the image borderline and backed with a support sheet.

Size: (unevenly trimmed sheet) 21.7 x 10.6 cm

Inscribed on plate: (lower left) “6”; (lower right) “[monogram of the artist] “MAF”.

Copy of TIB 391 (Konrad Oberhuber [ed.] 1978, “The Illustrated Bartsch: The Works of Marcantonio Raimondi and of his School”, vol. 27 [Part 2], New York, Abaris Books, p. 83, cat. no. 391)

Condition: a well-printed impression trimmed around the image borderline and laid upon an archival support sheet of millennium quality washi paper. Beyond pale stains (on the figure’s thigh and beside her ankle), the sheet is in a good condition for its considerable age with no tears, holes or folds.

I am selling this curiously interesting early engraving, for the total cost of AU$387 (approximately US$253.59, EUR 216.54, or GBP 187.99), this includes worldwide express postage and handling. Please note that any applicable import duties or taxes imposed by the destination country are the responsibility of the buyer.

If you are interested in purchasing this personification of hope as the Roman goddess, Spes—note the flower shown in the hem of her skirt at right which is one of her attributes—please contact me (oz_jim@printsandprinciples.com) and I will send you a PayPal invoice to make the payment easy.

Note that currently mail services from Australia to the USA have been suspended. Consequently, at the moment I am unable to accept purchases needing shipping to the United States.
