Edwin Landseer, Folio of Six Childhood Etchings

Edwin Landseer (also known as Sir Edwin Henry Landseer) (1802–1873)

Folio of Six Original Etchings by Edwin Landseer: The Childhood Etchings of Sir Edwin Landseer R.A.

Technical Details & Condition:

This solander folio of etchings is numbered 11 in a rare limited edition of only 80 copies, of which 75 were available for sale. The etchings were printed by Iain Bain at the John Boydell Press in Bristol, commissioned for The Heritage Collection, and published in 1974.

Included is an introductory section discussing Landseer’s early prints, accompanied by a collection of five original etchings printed from Landseer’s plates. An additional sixth print is included, sourced from a plate described as: “Hitherto unpublished studies … discovered under a crust of old printing ink on the reverse of the plate carrying Landseer’s earliest work (No. 1 in the set).”

Also included are promotional materials related to the folio, along with the original purchase receipt for GBP 88 at the time of publication in 1974. Each etching is hand inscribed in pencil with the edition number, “11/75,” and the plate number.

All the etchings are strong impressions and in near pristine condition—free from tears, holes, folds, abrasions, stains, or signs of handling. Only the external folio boards show minor signs of handling.
