Circle of Jan Sadeler I, “Winter”, c. 1580–82, after Jacopo Bassano

Circle of Jan Sadeler I (also known as Johannes Sadeler and Johann Sadeler) (1550–1600)

“Winter” (or “Hyems”), circa 1580

Technical Details & Condition:

Engraving on fine laid paper trimmed with a narrow margin around the image borderline and professionally backed with washi paper providing structural support.

This is an unsigned engraving copying in the same direction as the plate by Jan Sadeler I from the series of four rural allegorical plates, “The Four Seasons”, made in collaboration with Raphael Sadeler I (1560/61–1628/32) who executed the plates “Spring” and “Autumn.” The composition is based on the design of an unknown artist from the workshop of the Venetian painter and draughtsman, Jacopo Bassano (also known as Jacopo da Ponte and Giacomo Bassano) (c. 1510/18–1592).

The impression is strong, crisp, and well-printed, but with numerous replenished small losses. Aside from these restorations the sheet is now structurally stable and is free of significant stains.

• Sheet: 19.8 x 28.2 cm
