Jean Lepautre (1618–1682)

“Font with Two Variants at Bottom and Ornamented with the Adoration of the Shepherds”, c1667, plate 2 from the series of six plates depicting fonts in the Roman style (“Plates ala Romaine”), published in 1667 by Jean Leblond I (aka Jean Le Blond) and Pierre Mariette (II) in 1667 and in a later edition by Jombert in 1751.

Etching on laid paper, trimmed along the image borderline (retaining the artist’s name appending the borderline) and backed with a support sheet.
Size: (sheet) 29.4 x 21.1 cm.
Inscribed on plate below the image borderline: (right) “le Potre fecit”.

Condition: a richly inked and near faultless early impression trimmed along the image borderline but retaining the artist’s name below the borderline and backed with a support sheet. The trimmed sheet is in excellent condition with no tears, folds, holes, abrasions, significant stains or foxing.
