Paul Avril’s engraving, “La Vierge et l'Enfant Jésus”, 1889, after Giovanni Antonio Boltraffio

Paul Avril (aka Paul Victor Avril) (1843–1904)

“La Vierge et l'Enfant Jésus”, 1889, after Giovanni Antonio Boltraffio’s (aka Giovanni Antonio Beltraffio) (1467–1516) painting, “Madonna con Bambino”, 1487–88, in the Musèe Poldi-Pezzoli (Milan) (https://museopoldipezzoli.it/catalogo/#/dettaglio/119305_Madonna%20con%20Bambino), printed by A Clément (fl. c1887–1892) and published in Paris as an illustration to the periodical, “Gazette des Beaux-Arts”, 1889, opposite page 310 (see https://archive.org/details/gazettedesbeaux02unkngoog/page/n374/mode/2up).

Engraving with etching on wove paper backed with a support sheet.

Size: (sheet) 27.1 x 17.8 cm; (plate) 21.2 x 16.7 cm; (image borderline) 16.8 x 13.4 cm.

Lettered in plate below the image borderline: (left) “G._A. Boltraffio pinx./ Gazette des Beaux-Arts”; (centre) “LA VIERGE ET L'ENFANT JÉSUS/ ( Musèe Poldi-Pezzoli, à Milan )”; (right) “P. Avril sc./ Imp.A.Clément.Paris”.

Condition: a strong and well-printed (near faultless) impression with margins and laid upon a sheet of millennium quality washi paper providing wide margins. The sheet is in an excellent condition with no tears, holes, folds, abrasions, significant stains or foxing.

I am selling this sensitively engraved translation of a small painting by one of Leonardo da Vinci's most gifted pupils, Giovanni Antonio Boltraffio—note the very Leonardesque “spark of life”/inner life that Boltraffio has captured in this portrayal of the Virgin and Child—for AU$190 (currently US$129.09/ EUR127.97/GBP108.79 at the time of posting this listing) including postage and handling to anywhere in the world, but not (of course) any import duties/taxes imposed by some countries.

If you are interested in purchasing this superb engraving, please contact me (oz_jim@printsandprinciples.com) and I will send you a PayPal invoice to make the payment easy.
