Aegidius Sadeler II (also
known as Ægedius Sadeler, Egidius Sadeler, Gillis Sadeler, and Gillis Sadler)
(1568–1629)
“Landscape with Crossed Tree Trunks” (TIB
title) (also known as “Landscape with Mountain Stream” [Rijksmuseum] and “Landscape
with a Torrent” [MET]), c. 1610 (1597–1629)
Technical Details & Condition:
Etching and engraving on buff laid paper with
a partial watermark and a small margin around the platemark. This is a lifetime
impression of state i (of iii)—prior to the addition of Marco Sadeler’s
name (fl. 1660s) as publisher in the second state, and before its erasure in
the third state.
The print is based on a lost drawing by Pieter
Stevens II (c. 1567–after 1626), and it is the second plate in the
eight-part series “Eight Bohemian Riverscapes and Landscapes.”
The impression is strong, crisp, and
well-printed, showing no signs of wear to the printing plate. Aside from some
pencil notations on the verso from past collectors, the sheet is in
near-pristine condition, free of tears, holes, folds, abrasions, or significant
stains.
