Carl Friedrich Schmidt (1811–1890)
“Plate X: Section II, Mammifères”, 1882–1886, colour lithograph printed in Berlin, based on a design executed in 1882 by the
renowned zoologist and botanist Hermann Burmeister (1807–1892). This
artwork serves as Plate X in Burmeister’s comprehensive work, “Description
physique de la République Argentine d'après des observations personnelles et
étrangères”.
The
lithograph is printed on heavy wove paper backed with a support sheet.
Size:
(sheet) 35.7 x 47.3 cm
Inscribed in the plate: (upper left) “II Mammifères”; (upper right) “Pl. X”; (lower left) “H. Burmeister del. August 1882.”; (lower right) “C.F. Schmidt lith. Berlin.”
Each
anatomical detail is labelled with a relevant figure number and scale.
Condition:
A strong, well-printed impression with vivid, unfaded colour. The sheet is in
excellent condition, free from tears, holes, abrasions, or stains.
This
striking, large illustration depicts a seal with detailed studies of its skeletal
features—potentially offering comparative insights between living and
fossilized seals from Argentina (though this is a speculative interpretation). Priced
at AU$216 (approximately US$140.55, EUR €120.94, GBP £105.36), including
worldwide express shipping. Please note that any applicable import duties are
the buyer’s responsibility.
