Jan Sadeler I (aka Johannes Sadeler; Johann Sadeler) (1550–1600)

“William, Duke of Bavaria” (TIB title) (aka “Portrait of William V of Bavaria with the Order of the Fleece”), c. 1580. William V (1548–1626), known as "William the Pious" for his devotion to prayer, was Duke of Bavaria from 1579 to 1597. He was also a notable patron of the arts, supporting the development and spread of Mannerism in Bavaria through commissioning works and fostering artistic innovation during his reign.

Engraving on fine laid paper, trimmed around the oval image borderline and laid upon a support sheet.

Size: (oval sheet) 16 x 12.5 cm.

Lettered in plate: (following the oval frame) “SERENISSIMVS GVILHELMVS COMES PALATINVS RHENI SVPERIORIS AC INFERIORIS BAVARIAE DVX” ([transl.] HIS HOLINESS WILLIAM, COUNT PALATIN, DUKE OF THE UPPER RHINE AND LOWER BAVARIA); (above William’s shoulder to the left) “I^.S^.”; (below the portrait) “IN DEO FACIEM [US]/ VIRTVTEM” (IN GOD I MAKE MY POWER).
