Eugène Delâtre’s drypoint, “Route d'Arzon (Morbihan)”, 1927

Eugène Delâtre (1864-1938)

“Route d'Arzon (Morbihan)”, 1927, artist’s proof (inscribed ''Ep d'Artiste''), signed in pencil by the artist.

Based on the pencil inscription (presumably made by the artist), I understand that the portrayed scene is in Morbihan that I understand is in Brittany (northwest of France).

Drypoint with plate tone on cream laid paper (watermark “Arches”) with small margins and inscribed in pencil with the artist’s signature and annotations.

Size: (sheet) 24 x 28.9 cm; (plate) 17.2 x 26.8 cm; (image) 16.5 x 26.2 cm.

Inscribed in pencil below the platemark: (left) “Ep[reuve] d'Artiste”; (right) [artist’s signature]; (lower edge of sheet at right) “Route d Arzon (Morbihan)”.

Artist’s proof

IFF 21–5 (Jean Adhémar & Jacques Lethève 1954, “Inventaire du Fonds Français: Bibliothèque Nationale”, Paris, Département des Estampes, cat. no. 21-5).

Condition: a strong impression with a few breaks (white spots) in the plate tone and small margins. The sheet is in a very good condition with no tears, holes, folds, significant stains or foxing.

I am selling this exceptionally rare hand-signed artist’s proof (épreuve) of a sensitively executed drypoint showing rural life in Morbihan, Brittany, complete with free-range chickens and very French looking houses, for AU$340 (currently US$244.93/EUR228.37/GBP195.78 at the time of posting this print) including postage and handling to anywhere in the world, but not (of course) any import duties/taxes imposed by some countries.

If you are interested in purchasing this freely executed drypoint by the printmaker who not only introduced artists like Renoir, Lautrec and Mary Cassatt to the drypoint medium, but also printed Picasso’s illustrations for the first Cubist book (Max Jacob’s “Saint Matorel”), please contact me (oz_jim@printsandprinciples.com) and I will send you a PayPal invoice to make the payment easy.

Note that I have previously listed another very fine drypoint by Eugène Delâtre that is still currently available: https://www.printsandprinciples.com/2018/11/eugene-delatres-drypoint-landscape-with.html.
