James G Seymour
Lucas (fl.1831–1834)
"Evening
Landscape with a Figure with Arms Raised and Two Birds" (descriptive title
only), c.1832, mezzotint designed by the artist in the manner of John Martin
(1789–1854), possibly published by Rittner & Goupil (fl.1827–1919).
Mezzotint with
etching on heavy wove paper, trimmed with a small margin around the platemark
and backed with a support sheet providing wide margins.
Size: (sheet) 12.2
x 17.1cm; (plate) 11 x 16.4cm; (image borderline) 8 x 14.4cm.
Lettered in plate below the image borderline: (left) “Desd. & Engd. by”; (right) “J. G. S Lucas”.
Condition: This
is a richly inked and well-printed impression, carefully trimmed with a small
margin around the platemark and mounted onto an archival (millennium-quality)
washi paper that provides generous margins. There is minor surface dustiness;
aside from that, the sheet is in excellent condition, free of tears, holes,
folds, or stains.
This offering
features a rare and remarkably beautiful mezzotint executed in the artist’s
characteristic mixed technique—evident, for example, in the etching details of
the rocks and the mezzotint rocker marks applied later across the cascade at
lower right. Priced at AU$249 (approximately US$161.02, EUR 138.99, or GBP
119.85), this includes worldwide express postage and handling. Please note that
any applicable import duties or taxes imposed by the destination country are
the responsibility of the buyer.
If you are
interested in acquiring this evocative, darkly poetic scene—please be aware
that the rarity of this print means it is not held in any museum collection,
leaving its narrative open to interpretation. To inquire or purchase, contact
