Unidentified lithographer from the circle of Charles Zacharie Landelle (1812–1908)
“Velleda”, circa 1870
Technical Details & Condition:
Lithograph in the crayon-manner, printed in two colours (black and white)
on grey-toned wove paper. The sheet is trimmed with some loss of the
publication details, and backed with a support sheet, providing wide margins. This
is plate 75 from a series of lithographs designed for study and copying, printed
and published in London by George Rowney & Co.
The design is based on Charles Zacharie
Landelle’s 1870 painting titled, “Velleda, Prophetess of the Bructeri,
Exciting her People against the Romans”. See: https://www.rct.uk/collection/search#/1/collection/406704/velleda-prophetess-of-the-bructeri-exciting-her-people-against-the-romans).
Interestingly, Landelle’s painting was also reproduced as a photogravure for
the cover of “The Illustrated London News” on 31 October 1874. See: https://www.mediastorehouse.com.au/fine-art-finder/artists/english-school/velleda-engraving-23070048.html).
The impression is strong and well-printed. The sheet has two small
tears in the edges; otherwise, it is in near pristine condition—free of holes,
folds, or stains.
