Eugène André Champollion, “Neptune and Amymone”, c. 1896, after Boucher

Eugène André Champollion (1848–1901)

“Neptune and Amymone”, c. 1896, after the painting by François Boucher (1703–1770) in the Palais de Trianon (as inscribed in the plate), printed and published in Paris by Albert Quantin (1850–1930).

Although the IFF does not describe this print by Champollion, the date that I have attributed to it is based on two other etchings by Champollion after Boucher, “Le Nid” (IFF 67) and “La Guirlande” (IFF 68), that were both executed in 1896 (see Jean Adhémar 1949, “Inventaire du Fonds Français après 1800: CABANE–CICÉRI”, Paris, Bibliothèque Nationale de France, Département des Estampes, vol. 4, p. 276: https://gallica.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/bpt6k5510949t/f298).

Etching on fine laid paper with wide margins as published.

Size: (sheet) 45 x 31 cm; (platemark); 31.5 x 23.9 cm; (image borderline) 25.8 x 19.5 cm.

Lettered in plate below the image borderline: (left) E. Champollion d’après Boucher”; (centre) “NEPTUNE ET AMYMONE”; (right) “A. Quantin. Imp. Edit.”

Condition: a strong and near faultless impression with generous margins. The sheet is in an almost pristine condition with no tears, holes, folds, abrasions, stains, or signs of handling.

Price & Shipping: AU$226 (approx. US$147.73/ €127.49/ £112.30), including worldwide express shipping. Import duties are the buyer’s responsibility.

If you're interested in purchasing this finely crafted and rare etching, which depicts Neptune with his trident raised—and notably features a cupid somewhat awkwardly balanced upon it! —scaring away a satyr attempting to seduce the beautiful Amymone, please contact me at oz_jim@printsandprinciples.com. I will gladly provide a secure and convenient PayPal invoice for your purchase.

Gilles Demarteau’s crayon-manner engraving, “Farmyard with ruined buildings and two children playing on bales of hay”, c1759

Gilles Demarteau (1722–1776)

Farmyard with ruined buildings and two children playing on bales of hay” (descriptive title only), c1759, after a chalk drawing by François Boucher (1703–1770), published in Paris by Giles Demarteau and printed by P Aubert (fl.c.1755–1775).

Regarding the publication of this print, the Curator of the British Museum offers the following insights:

“Plate 1 in the catalogue published by Demarteau's nephew in 1788. The first impressions were printed in black and issued in 1759” (see BM inv. no. 1868,0612.339).

Crayon-manner engraving printed in sanguine coloured ink on laid paper, trimmed with a narrow margin around the image borderline (with loss of lettered publication details on lower edge) and backed with a support sheet.

Size: (sheet) 29.4 x 40.3 cm; (inner image borderline) 26.8 x 37.8 cm.

Inscribed on plate along the lower margin: (left) “Boucher in. Del.”; (right) “Demarteau scul.”

De Leymarie 11 (Leopold de Leymarie 1896, “L'Oeuvre de Gilles Demarteau l'aine graveur du Roi”, Paris, Georges Rapilly, p. 19, cat. no. 11 [see https://archive.org/details/loeuvredegillesd00leym/page/18/mode/2up]); IFF 11 (Inventaire du Fonds Français: Bibliothèque Nationale, Département des Estampes); Jean-Richard 597 (Jean-Richard Pierrette 1978, “L'Oeuvre Gravé de François Boucher dans la Collection Edmond de Rothschild”, Paris, Éditions des Musées Nationaux, cat. no. 597).

See also the description of this print offered by the British Museum: https://www.britishmuseum.org/collection/object/P_1868-0612-339.

Condition: strong impression trimmed with a narrow margin around the image borderline (with loss of lettered publication details on lower edge). Beyond a few marks in the sky area (e.g. the dot marks at upper left) and a closed tear on the upper margin edge, the sheet is in a good condition for its considerable age and is laid upon an archival support sheet of millennium quality washi paper.

I am selling this beautifully romantic crayon-manner stipple engraving after the Boucher’s design for the total cost of AU$243 (currently US$173.63/EUR147.31/GBP133.14 at the time of this listing) including Express Mail (EMS) postage and handling to anywhere in the world, but not (of course) any import duties/taxes imposed by some countries.

If you are interested in purchasing this interesting example interpretative printmaking where a stipple roulette is employed to mimic the grainy texture of a chalk drawing, please contact me (oz_jim@printsandprinciples.com) and I will send you a PayPal invoice to make the payment easy.

Jean Jacques Flipart’s engraving, “L'Oiseau Privé”, c.1769, after François Boucher

Jean Jacques Flipart (1719–1782)

“L'Oiseau Privé” (aka “The Tamed Bird”), c.1769, after François Boucher (1703–1770).

Etching and engraving on laid paper with a small margin around the platemark and backed with a support sheet.
Size: (sheet) 27.1 x 20 cm; (plate) 25.3 x 18.1 xm; (image bordeline) 23.6 x 17.4 cm.
Inscribed on plate within the image borderline: (lower centre) “L'Oiseau Privé.”
Lettered on plate below the image borderline: (left) “Bouché prer. Peintre du Roi Pinx”; (centre) “à Paris Chés Flipart montagne Ste Genevieve Chés Mr. Levié Orfevre”; (right): “F. Flipart le jeune Sculp.”

Jean-Richard 252.1011 (Pierrette Jean-Richard 1978, “Musée du Louvre. Cabinet des Dessins Collection Edmond de de Rothschild. Inventaire général des gravures. École français. I. L'oeuvre gravé de François Boucher dans la Collection Edmond de Rothschild” vol. I, Paris, 1978, cat. no. 1011, p. 252, ill.).

See also the descriptions of this print at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and The Clark Museum:

To 18th century French viewers, this charmingly romantic image may have meanings deeper than what is portrayed. For example, when this image is seen in context with the pendant print of a young girl with a dead bird (see https://www.philamuseum.org/collections/permanent/2714.html?mulR=984926873%7C8) the intimate scene shown here may be read as a corollary to the girl’s love relationships and the pendant scene of a girl with a dead bird may be read as the girl’s loss of her lover and her virginity.

Condition: strong and well-printed/near faultless impression trimmed with a small margin around the platemark. There are restored abrasions in the upper margin and light dustiness to the margins, otherwise the sheet is in very good condition for its age and is laid upon a support sheet of archival (millennium quality) washi paper.

I am selling this very beautiful and romantic engraving showing a young girl in what I see as a disciplinary dialogue of hand gestures with her pet bird, for AU$238 (currently US$166.34/EUR146.56/GBP131.54 at the time of posting this print) including postage and handling to anywhere in the world (but not, of course, any import duties/taxes imposed by some countries).
