Edmond Yon, “Bords De La Maine”, c.1880

Edmond Yon (aka Edmond Charles Joseph Yon) (1836–1897)

“Bords De La Maine” (Banks of the Maine), c.1880, a proof-state impression before lettering for publication as plate 13 from the series, “L'Eau Forte en 1880”, published by Alfred Cadart, from a volume of four years of “L'Eau-Forte” (see description of the publication detals offered by the British Museum https://www.britishmuseum.org/collection/object/P_1915-0105-15-78 [BM 1915,0105.15.78]).

Etching with drypoint on buff coloured fine laid paper with wide margins.

Size: (sheet) 35 x 49.8 cm; (plate) 23.8 x 31.5 cm; (image borderline) 19.7 x 27 cm.

Inscribed in plate: (upper left corner) “E. Y.”

Inscribed in pencil below the image borderline: (lower right) “E. Yon” (note that I do not know if this inscription is by the artist or a note by a previous collector identifying the artist); there are pencil inscriptions by a previous collector on verso.

Condition: a strong and well printed impression with generously wide margins. There is minor surface dustiness and a few marks in the margins, otherwise the sheet is in a good condition.

I am selling this finely executed and delicately nuanced tonal etching of the forest bordering the River Maine in France for AU$234 (equivalent to approximately US$148.72, EUR 130.80, or GBP 112.54 at the time of listing) and includes Express Mail Service (EMS) postage and handling to any worldwide destination. Please note that any import duties or taxes levied by the destination country are the responsibility of the buyer and are not included in the purchase price. Payment is requested in Australian dollars (AU$234).

If you are interested in purchasing this superb etching—a print that I would describe as a “printmaker’s print” because there is such subtlety in its execution—please contact me (oz_jim@printsandprinciples.com) and I will send you a PayPal invoice to make the payment easy.

Edmond Yon, “Near the Coast at Cayeux-Sur-Mer”, 1885

Edmond Yon (aka Edmond Charles Joseph Yon) (1836–1897)

“Near the Coast at Cayeux-Sur-Mer” (Picard coast, France), 1885, illustration facing page 37 to Philip Gilbert Hamerton’s (1834–1894) “Landscape”, published in 1885 by Seeley & Co. (fl.1839–early 1900s) in London.

Etching, drypoint and dot-roulette on fine wove paper with full margins as published.

Size: (sheet) 21.3 x 31.1 cm; (plate) 16.2 x 24.3 cm; (image borderline) 14 x 21.7 cm.

Inscribed in plate below the image borderline: (left) “Edmond Yon P[inx]t & Sc[ulp]t”.

Condition: a richly inked and well-printed (near flawless) impression in a pristine condition with no tears, holes, folds, abrasions, stains, foxing or signs of handling.

I am selling this superb etching with velvety rich touches of drypoint showing a herdsman leading a cow through marshlands—possibly at the estuary of the River Somme in Baie de Somme in which the town of Cayeux-sur-Mer (mentioned in the title) is located—for AU$187 in total (currently US$122.63/EUR112.65/GBP96.25 at the time of posting this listing) including Express Mail (EMS) postage and handling to anywhere in the world, but not (of course) any import duties/taxes imposed by some countries.

If you are interested in purchasing this marvellous etching by a true master of the craft—note how the artist has created the effect of a “splash” of light falling on the reeds in the front of the herdsman and used the silhouette shapes of leaves in the foreground to give spatial depth to the scene—please contact me (oz_jim@printsandprinciples.com) and I will send you a PayPal invoice to make the payment easy.
