Christian Ludwig von Hagedorn (1712–1780).

Sketch Plate with a Man Holding a Glass of Wine and a Small Landscape, 1744, from the series, Landscapes and Heads (see https://www.nga.gov/collection/art-object-page.210732.html).

Etching on laid paper trimmed around the platemark with a thread margin.

Size: (sheet) 12 x 9.1 cm; (image borderline) 11.4 x 8.5 cm.

Inscribed on plate in fine lettering below the image borderline: (lower left) “Appendix i.d.10 Sept 1744”.

Lifetime impression, state i? (of ii?) before the addition of the artist’s monogram at lower right (see reference to the monogram on the copy of this print held by the NGA and the use of the artist’s monogram in another print from the same series held by the Rijksmuseum: http://hdl.handle.net/10934/RM0001.COLLECT.120394.

Le Blanc 9 (?) (Ch. Le Blanc 1854, “Manuel de l'amateur d'estampes, contenant un dictionnaire des graveurs de toutes les nations”, Paris).

Condition: a well-printed impression trimmed along the platemark in very good condition with no tears, holes, folds, abrasions or significant stains. The verso has a previous collectors’ notes including a faded ink remark by an old hand: “hagedo[r]n”.

I am selling this sensitively etched study of ten heads—the largest holding a half-filled goblet—and a panoramic river landscape with a fisherman in the right foreground and other figures and buildings in the distance, for the total cost of AU$243 (currently US$189.15/EUR155.76/GBP136.06 at the time of this listing) including Express Mail (EMS) postage and handling to anywhere in the world, but not (of course) any import duties/taxes imposed by some countries.

If you are interested in purchasing this exceptionally rare etching of closely observed studies—note that the figures on the far bank of the river scene are half the size of a grain of rice and yet their portrayed details show clearly that they are fishermen walking away from the river—please contact me (oz_jim@printsandprinciples.com) and I will send you a PayPal invoice to make the payment easy.
