Achille Sirouy (aka Achille Louis Joseph Sirouy) (1834–1904)

“Women of Algiers” (aka “Femmes d'Alger”; “Femmes d'Alger dans leur appartement”), c1886 (see Beraldi, p. 34),  pencil-signed proof impression with annotations before lettering, lithograph printed in Paris by Lemercier (fl.1827–1899) after Eugène Delacroix’s (aka Ferdinand Victor Eugène Delacroix) (1798–1863) famous painting, “Femmes d'Alger dans leur appartement” (1834), in the collection of the Musée du Louvre, Paris (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Women_of_Algiers).

Lithograph on chine collé on heavy wove paper signed and annotated by the artist in pencil below the image.

Size: (sheet) 25.8 x 30.6 cm; (chine collé/image borderline) 18.5 x 23.9 cm.

Annotated in pencil below the image: (left) “Ach. Sirouy – d’après E. Delacroix” (right) [?].

The British Museum offers the following description of this print (also a hand-signed proof): “Algerian women, after Delacroix; three women in Oriental costume seated on carpets around a narghile, in a room with walls decorated with tiles; Black woman walking to right at right; signed proof, before letter Lithograph” (https://www.britishmuseum.org/collection/object/P_1888-0619-188).

Condition: a strong and well-printed (near faultless) lithograph with crisp (but not fully legible) pencil annotations. The sheet is in an excellent (near pristine) condition for its age with no tears, holes, abrasions, significant stains or foxing.

I am selling this exceptionally rare proof-state hand-signed impression for the total cost of AU$256 (currently US$173.00/EUR162.83/GBP144.36 at the time of posting this listing) including postage and handling to anywhere in the world, but not (of course) any import duties/taxes imposed by some countries.
