Adolph von Menzel's lithograph, “The Antiquary: Self-Portrait”, 1851

Adolph von Menzel (aka Adolph Menzel; Adolph Friedrich Erdmann von Menzel) (1815–1905)

“The Antiquary: Self-Portrait” (Der Antiquar: Selbstbildnis) (aka “Selbstporträt ”[Self-portrait]; “Vieil homme pensif” [Pensive old man]; “Dämon” [Demon]), 1851, signed in the plate at upper right.

Note: A. Weber executed a wood-engraving (21.5 x 17.5 cm) reproducing this composition with some subtle differences, but it is not mentioned in Bock’s catalogue raisonné.

Lithograph on wove paper with generous margins backed with a support sheet.
Size: (sheet) 39.9 x 28.5 cm; (plate) 30.8 x 24.6 cm; (image borderline) 24.9 x 20 cm.
Inscribed on plate within the image borderline: (upper right corner) “Menzel”.
State i (of i) Although Bock does not advise that there was a lettered state for this print, the large margins suggest that this may be a proof state, but I have no publication details regarding this print to verify this possibility.

Bock 405 (Elfried Bock 1923, “Adolph Menzel: Verzeichnis seines graphischen Werkes”, Berlin, Amsler & Ruthardt).

The Cleveland Museum of Art offers a description of this print:

Condition: strong impression with generous margins laid onto a support sheet of archival (millennium quality) washi paper. There is a diagonal fold on the lower left outside of the image area that has been flattened on the support sheet. Beyond this issue the sheet is in good condition (i.e. there are no tears, holes, losses, abrasions, stains or foxing).
