Charles Daubigny, “Le Printemps”, 1857

Charles Daubigny (aka Charles François Daubigny) (1817–1878)

“Le Printemps” (aka “Springtime”), 1857, proof before lettering with title and publication details, possibly printed by Auguste Delâtre (1822–1907). This etching is translation into line of the artist’s painting shown at the Salon of 1857 and entered in the collection of the Louvre. From the description of the various states of this print offered by Melot (1978), I believe that this impression in an intermediary state between states ii and iii before the addition of details for print’s publication in “L’Artiste”, volume 2 (September 6, 1857).

Etching, on cream chine collé on heavy wove paper with wide margins

Size: (sheet) 29.2 x 42.8 cm; (plate) 17.7 x 27.9 cm; (chine collé) 16.4 x 26.2 cm; (image borderline) 11.9 x 24.5 cm.

Lettered in plate below the image borderline: (left) “Daubigny, del. et Sc.”

Condition: a strong and well-printed (near faultless) impression with generously wide margins in a near pristine condition with no tears, holes, folds, losses, abrasions or stains.

I am selling this proof-state impression of a very beautiful etching by one of the leading figures of the Barbizon School, for AU$319 (equivalent to approximately US$204.61, EUR 181.87, or GBP 153.79 at the time of listing) and includes Express Mail Service (EMS) postage and handling to any worldwide destination.
