Hector Allemand, “Ruisselet sous Bois”, 1853

Hector Allemand (aka Louis Hector François Allemand) (1809–1886)

“Ruisselet sous Bois” (Stream under the Woods), 1853.

Etching on laid paper, trimmed along the platemark and laid upon a support sheet providing wide margins.

Size: (sheet) 17.7 x 16.1 cm

Inscribed in plate in the reverse direction: (lower right corner) “H. Allemand 1853. gravé sur nature”.

P., B. 80 (Paul Prouté & Colette E. Bidon 1977, “Nouvelles de l'Estampe No. 33:  Louis-Hector Allemand”, p. 21, cat. no. 80).

As advised in the preface to Paul Prouté and Colette E. Bidon’s 1977 catalogue of Allemand’s prints, the works of Allemand are quite difficult to find as most of his prints were made for friends. Interestingly, this print is inscribed (in the reverse direction) that it was executed in situ within the landscape (“gravé sur nature”).

Condition: a strong and well-printed, faultless impression trimmed along the platemark and laid upon a support sheet of archival (millennium quality) washi paper providing wide margins. The sheet is in an excellent condition with no tears, holes, folds, abrasions or significant stains.

I am selling this freely executed etching of great rarity, for AU$274 (equivalent to approximately US$175.49, EUR 157.16, or GBP 132.11 at the time of listing) and includes Express Mail Service (EMS) postage and handling to any worldwide destination. Please note that any import duties or taxes levied by the destination country, if any, are the responsibility of the buyer and are not included in the purchase price. Payment is requested in Australian dollars (AU$274).

If you are interested in purchasing this somewhat joyous etching revealing (at least to my eyes) the artist’s pleasure with being in the landscape despite a decline in his eyesight—a decline that had become noticeable three years earlier—please contact me (oz_jim@printsandprinciples.com) and I will send you a PayPal invoice to make the payment easy.
