Charles Beauverie, “The Loire at Saint-Just-Saint-Rambert”, 1879

Charles Beauverie (also known as Charles Joseph Beauverie) (1839–1923)

“The Loire at Saint-Just-Saint-Rambert” (or simply, “Saint-Just”), 1879.

Background insights:

The scene beautifully depicts the Loire River meandering through the historic Forez region of east-central France. This scarce, proof-state impression was pulled before the plate was lettered for official publication in the second volume of Félix Thiollier’s monumental work, Le Forez Pittoresque et Monumental.

Technical Details & Condition:

Etching with atmospheric plate tone on imitation washi paper with wide margins. This is a choice proof state before the inclusion of publication lettering, hand-signed by the artist in ink and bearing a personal dedication to Miss/Mrs Millefaut (“Charles Beauverie / à Mlle [or Mme] Millefaut”) below the image at the lower right. Given this highly personal provenance, the print was a direct gift from Beauverie to a family member—likely the wife or daughter—of his close contemporary, the celebrated Lyonnais sculptor Paul-Émile Millefaut (1847–1907), who was highly active in the same artistic and scholarly circles.

The impression is remarkably strong, crisp, and rich in detail. The fine sheet remains in near-pristine condition: bright, exceptionally clean, and entirely free from any tears, folds, abrasions, or foxing stains.

Dimensions:

• Sheet: 27.6 x 37.1 cm
• Platemark: 20.0 x 28.0 cm
• Image borderline: 16.9 x 26.1 cm

Charles Jacque, “Le Repos”, 1864

Charles Jacque (also known as Charles Émile Jacque) (1813–1894)

“Le Repos” (also known as “Sept Vaches et Berger” [Seven Cows and a Herdsman]), 1864

Technical Details & Condition:

Etching, engraving, drypoint, and roulette on ivory laid paper, featuring full and exceptionally wide margins as issued.

This impression is from the fourth state (of five), before the addition of publication lettering. In this fourth state, the shepherd at the lower right is portrayed sitting near seven grazing cows. Interestingly, in the previous third state, the cattle were depicted as sheep and the shepherd was accompanied by a dog, both of which have been erased and re-engraved for the present state.

This is a richly inked, strong, crisp, and faultless (museum-quality) impression in near-pristine condition—completely free of tears, holes, folds, or significant staining.

Dimensions:

• Sheet: 48.2 x 30.4 cm
• Platemark: 22.0 x 16.6 cm
• Image borderline: 18.7 x 14.6 cm

In-Plate lettering:

• Lower-left corner: “ch Jacque”
