“The Butterfly” (aka “Child with a Butterfly”), 1872, after William Blake Richmond (1842–1921), published in London by Seeley, Jackson & Halliday (fl.1867–1880) as an illustration to Philip Gilbert Hamerton’s (1834–1894) art periodical, “The Portfolio”, in 1874.

Etching with plate tone on heavy laid buff coloured paper.

Size: (sheet) 29.6 x 21.6 cm; (plate) 16 x 14.4 cm; (image borderline) 15 x 13.2 cm.

Inscribed in plate: (lower left) “W. WISE after W. B. RICHMOND.”

The British Museum offers the following description of this print: “A naked baby seated to front in a field with feet crossed, head and shoulders turned to right and arms outstretched, trying to catch a butterfly; illustration to 'The Portfolio' of 1874; after Richmond. 1874” (https://www.britishmuseum.org/collection/object/P_1878-0511-129).

Condition: a strong and well-printed (near faultless) impression in a near pristine condition with no tears, holes, folds, abrasions or significant stains.

Etching on cream laid paper.

Size: (sheet) 24.3 x 29.1 cm; (plate) 17.8 x 21.2 cm; (image borderline) 15.5 x 19.8 cm.

Inscribed in plate with scratched lettering below the image borderline: (left) “W. WISE Sc.”

The British Museum offers the following description of this print: “A dog lying asleep on a fur rug, with a plumed helmet behind to left” (https://www.britishmuseum.org/collection/object/P_1878-0511-169).

Sadly, the dog, “Countess”, is not sleeping as Landseer has portrayed her. Instead, Countess was dead at the time when Landseer painted her. I understand that she fell to her death from the top of a high balustrade and her body was taken to Landseer to see if she could be immortalised. Landseer completed “Sleeping Bloodhound” four days later (see “The Portfolio”, 1875, p. 65).

Condition: a richly inked and well-printed (near faultless) impression in near pristine condition with no tears, holes, folds, abrasions, significant stains, foxing or signs of handling.

I am selling this superb etching after Edwin Landseer’s painting and possibly also after the engraving of the same composition by Edwin’s eldest brother, Thomas Landseer, for AU$187 (currently US$129.27/EUR126.89/GBP107.09 at the time of posting this print) including postage and handling to anywhere in the world, but not (of course) any import duties/taxes imposed by some countries.
