Charles Courtry, “Landscape with Two Cows and a Calf”, 1875, after Emile van Marcke de Lummen

Charles Courtry (aka Charles Jean Louis Courtry) (1846–1897)

“Landscape with Two Cows and a Calf”, 1875, a proof-state impression before the completion of the tonal rendering (see  https://www.britishmuseum.org/collection/object/P_1881-1112-141) and lettering for publication by Goupil (fl.1827–1919), signed in pencil by Charles Courtry after Emile van Marcke de Lummen’s (1827–1890) painting.

Note that the British Museum proposes the title, “Le Gué de Mouthiers” [The Mouthiers Ford]) (see inv. no. 1881,1112.141) following Henri Béraldi’s (1889) title of catalogue number 28 (vol. 5, p. 63), but Jean Adhémar (1949) (see IFF, number 101, vol. 5, p. 283) advises that the date of the print is 1880. This date of 1880 is different to the date, “[18]75”, inscribed in the plate. Consequently, this title may refer to a different print.

Etching with plate tone on laid paper, pencil-signed, proof-state impression with wide margins.

Size: (sheet) 44.4 x 58.9 cm; (platemark) 35.6 x 47.9 cm; (image borderline) 28.4 x 40.1 cm.

Inscribed (scratch lettering) in plate below the image borderline: (left) “EM. VAN MARCKE PINX”; (right) “CH. COURTRY SC 75” Impression signed by Courtry, in pencil.

Pencil signed by Charles Courtry at lower right.

Beraldi 28(?) (Henri Béraldi 1889, “Les Graveurs du XIXe Siècle: Guide de l'Amateur d'Estampes Modernes: CHERRIER–DIEN”, vol. 5, Paris, Librairie L. Conquet, p. 63, cat. no. 28; see https://archive.org/details/lesgraveursdu19e05berauoft/page/62/mode/2up): IFF 110 (?) (Jean Adhémar 1949, “Inventaire du Fonds Français après 1800: CIDOINE–DAUMIER”, Paris, Bibliothèque Nationale de France, Département des Estampes, vol. 5, p. 283, cat. no. 110 [see https://gallica.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/bpt6k5488526m/f295.image]).

The British Museum offers the following description of this print (from a later state): “Landscape with two cows and a calf in the foreground, beyond a country woman opening a gate (?) and in the background, on the opposite bank of a stream, more cows, after Van Marcke; proof before letter, signed by printmaker. 1875 Etching” (https://www.britishmuseum.org/collection/object/P_1881-1112-141).

Condition: a strong and well-printed (near faultless) impression in an excellent condition with no tears, holes, folds, abrasions or significant stains.

I am selling this exceptionally rare, pencil-signed proof-state etching—for the total cost of AU $310 (currently US $195.72/ EUR 186.52/ GBP 156.76 at the time of posting this listing) including Express Mail (EMS) postage and handling to anywhere in the world, but not (of course) any import duties/taxes imposed by some countries. Alfred Louis Brunet-Debaines (1845–1939)

“The Burial of Wilkie” (aka “Funérailles de Wilkie, d'après Turner” [Beraldi title]), 1874, after Joseph Mallord William Turner (1775–1851) published in London by Seeley & Co (aka L & G Seeley) (fl.1839–early XXc) as illustration plate to “The Portfolio” (1874) and (according to Henri Beraldi [1888]) printed by Goupil (fl.1827–1919).

Etching with drypoint on cream laid paper.

Size: (sheet) 29.9 x 22.2 cm; (plate) 21.7 x 19.9 cm; (image borderline) 15.9 x 15.5 cm.

IFF 13 (Inventaire du Fonds Français: Bibliothèque Nationale, Département des Estampes); Beraldi 25 (Henri Beraldi 1888, “Les graveurs du 19e siècle; guide de l'amateur d'estampes modernes”, vol. 4, Paris, L Conquet, p. 24, cat. no. 25 [see https://archive.org/details/lesgraveursdu19e04berauoft/page/24/mode/2up]).

The Curator of the British Museum advises that Turner’s painting translated into this etching “was pair to 'War, the Exile and the Rock Limpet' (Butlin & Joll 400)” and offers the following description of this print:

“Burial of Wilkie at sea; a ship at centre, with flames and smoke seen blowing to the left; in the far distance at left and right, boats; after JMW Turner (Butlin & Joll 399); illustration to 'The Portfolio' of 1874; state with engraver's name”

(https://www.britishmuseum.org/collection/object/P_1878-0511-106).

Condition: richly inked and well-printed impression (near faultless) in near pristine condition with no tears, holes, folds, abrasions, stains, foxing or signs of handling.

I am selling this stunningly beautiful etching showing a distant blaze of light on a steamship as Turner’s friend, Sir David Wilkie, R.A., is given an evening sea burial off the coast of Gibraltar in June 1841, for AU$224 (currently US$166.34/EUR137.23/GBP124.71 at the time of this listing) including Express Mail (EMS) postage and handling to anywhere in the world, but not (of course) any import duties/taxes imposed by some countries.

Emile Lassalle’s lithograph after Ernest Goupil’s drawing, “English establishment at Port Essington”, c1840, and two early photographs from this region

Emile Lassalle (1813–71) lithographer of the drawing by Ernest Goupil (1814–41)

“English establishment at Port Essington” (Établissement Anglais a Port-Essington”), c1840, Plate 119, published by Gide, Paris, in "Atlas Pittoresque - Voyage au Pôle Sud et dans l'Océanie, sur les corvettes l'Astrolabe et la Zélée, exécuté par ordre du Roi pendant les années 1837-1838-1839-1840 sous le commandement de M. J. Dumont d'Urville, capitaine de vaisseau", printed by Thierry Frères (fl1827-45) in Paris.

Two-colour lithograph on laid paper with full margins as published.
Size: (sheet) 34.8 x 53.9 cm; (image borderline) 26 x 38.8 cm
Lettered outside the image borderline: (upper left) “VOYAGE AU PÔLE SUD ET DANS L'OCÉANIE”; (upper right) “ATLAS PITTORESQUE. PL 119”; (lower left) Dessiné par Goupil lith e per Emile Lassalle”.”; (lower centre in three lines) Gide Editeur. / ÉTABLISSEMENT ANGLAIS A PORT-ESSINGTON. / (Côte N. de l'Australie.)”; (lower right) “Lith. de Thierry freres, Paris.”

The State Library of South Australia offers the following description of this print:
“This image of Port Essington has a great deal of fine detail, illustrating specificities of the general flora and types of housing. The artist has included a figures in the mid-ground, perhaps to further indicate scale, which also contextualises the scene. To the far left three Indigenous people are pictured around a dead tree trunk, perhaps included as an indication of a general presence amongst white settling colony establishments of this type. Despite the subject matter being somewhat idealised in this work, the artist's technique is particularly accomplished and the work is a good point of reference for the era.” (http://collections.slsa.sa.gov.au/resource/B+8964)

Condition: museum-quality, faultless impression in near pristine condition.

I am selling this exceptionally rare lithograph capturing the light and ruggedly beautiful setting one of the first British settlements destined to fail in the Northern Territory of Australia for the total cost of AU$460 (currently US$365.08/EUR306.85/GBP282.62 at the time of this listing) including postage and handling to anywhere in the world.

I really like this print as it captures the spirit of the Australian landscape perfectly. if someone were to ask me to explain why I see it that way, or if I were asked to describe just one critical feature that makes an Australian landscape different to any other, I would have to say: “An Aussie landscape needs to have trees with big lumps in them.” Certainly this large lithograph has a tree like that! The thing about the Australian landscape, however, is not just that there are distinctive trees with lumps on them—sometimes caused by termites, native bees or green ants building nests as big as footballs. More important than any particularities of the trees are the vistas that such trees frame: scenery of nothing in special where there is no distinctive centre–of–interest to be showcased. Just lots of endless sameness.

Leaving aside the essential ingredients for what constitutes the Australian Landscape—what is usually termed in the Australian vernacular as “the bush”—I thought that I might offer an insight into how the local culture has developed since this early settlement. The following quotes are GENUINE headlines extracted from the “NT News”:
“Why I stuck a cracker up my clacker”;
“Horny roo stalks NT women”;
“Catnappers shaved my pussy”;
“Best Man left bleeding after being hit in head by flying dildo”;
“Frog struck down by lightning”;
“Man arrested after cops spot suspiciously small package in his undies”;
“Bus driver bashed with watermelon”;
“Man stabbed with fish”

In short, the Northern Territory of Australia is a very special place.
