Victor Adam, “Cardinal de Retz Climbs onto the Parapet of the Pont Neuf to Harangue the People in 1648” & “A Barricade at the Pont Neuf in 1830”, 1841.

“Cardinal de Retz Climbs onto the Parapet of the Pont Neuf to Harangue the People. (War of the Fronde). August 20, 1648” (upper image) and “A Barricade at the Pont Neuf. 1830” (lower image), 1841. A two-panel lithograph printed by Alphonse Godard (fl.c.1841–1850) and published in Paris by Joseph Bulla & François Delarue (fl.1839–1849).

The upper panel shows a scene from the Fronde civil wars in France (1648–1653). I understand that the name of this war, “La Fronde”, refers to the slings used to smash windows. The lower panel draws a comparison with the upper panel by showing the same bridge barricaded during the July Revolution (aka The Three Glorious Days/Trois Glorieuses) of 1830. This is a rare proof-state impression with a printer’s proof on verso showing in an early state of another lithograph printed in a cool grey.

Condition: a well-printed impression. Beyond minor surface marks (dustiness), the sheet is in a very good condition with no tears, folds, abrasions or significant stains.

“Study in Two Crayons, No. 77” (aka “Étude aux deux Crayons, No. 77”), 1844, after the design by Charles Philippe Larivière (1798-1876), plate 77 in Julien’s drawing course, “Cours de Dessin”, printed by Joseph Lemercier (aka Joseph Rose Lemercier) (1803–1887) and published in Paris by Bulla & Delarue (fl.c1839-1849) and in London by the Anaglyphic Company (fl.1841–1844).

Size: (sheet) 49.5 x 31.6 cm.

Inscribed in plate along lower edge: (left) “[signature] Julien/ Paris_J. Bulla et F. Delarue, 10, rue JJ. Rousseau,/ Gache, r. de la Victoire, 58”; (centre) “Étude aux deux Crayons, N^o. 77^./ Lithographiée par Julien d’aprés Larivière.”; (right) “Imp. par Lemercier./ London. Publ. 1^st. September 1844 by the Anaglyphic Company, 25 Berners S^t. Oxford S^t.”

Condition: a strong and well-printed impression in an excellent (near pristine) condition. There are soft pencil inscriptions from a previous collector recto and verso on the lower edge.
