Technical Details & Condition:

Etching with plate tone on fine laid paper (“Glaslan” watermark) with generously wide margins as issued. This is an impression before lettering for publication from the fourth state (of seven), printed before the addition of the artist’s monogram in the upper right and the lower publication lettering (which includes the final title, artist’s name, and publisher details).

The etching is from the rare early series of twelve plates titled “12 Croquis à l'Eau-forte par Maxime Lalanne” (12 Etchings by Maxime Lalanne), also known as “Divertissements sur Cuivre” (Improvisations on Copper [Plates]), published in Paris in 1869.

The impression is richly inked and flawlessly printed. The sheet is in pristine condition, free of tears, holes, folds, abrasions, stains, or handling marks.

Technical Details & Condition:

Etching printed on pale grey chine collé on wove paper backed with a support sheet. The design is after a drawing by François Édouard Bertin (1797–1871) and this impression is from the third and final state, printed by Auguste Delâtre (aka Auguste Marie Delâtre) (1822–1907). It was published in Paris in the art periodical “Gazette des Beaux Arts” on 1^st May 1864, between pages 390 and 391.

The impression is richly inked and flawlessly printed. The sheet is in excellent condition, free from no holes, folds, abrasions, stains, or handling marks.

Maxime Lalanne (aka François Antoine Maxime Lalanne) (1827–1886)

“Vue de la Seine, Arc de Triomphe” (Villet title) (aka “Vue de Paris, Quai Voltaire” [Gutekunst title]), before 1863. This impression is signed in ink at lower left, possibly by the printer with the note “3^eme Epreuve …”, suggesting that this is the third test/proof.

Interestingly, I understand that this etching was the artist’s first attempt at etching and was unpublished (see Villet's (2010) translation of Lalanne’s annotation of the first state proof held by the New York Public Library [n.p., Villet cat. no. 198; https://digitalcollections.nypl.org/items/c2c7a650-c612-012f-6085-58d385a7bc34]).

Etching printed in warm black ink on heavy wove paper, with a signed, hand-inscribed inscription in brown ink (possibly by the printer) at lower left.
