Technical Details & Condition:

Engraving with hand-colouring on fine wove paper with wide margins. This print is from the series “Musée Français,” which documents paintings and statues in the Louvre, published in Paris between 1803 and 1809. It is after an intermediary drawing by Jean Claude Gallier (fl. c. 1800–1820), based on the painting “Joueur de Musette” (1635/37) by David Teniers the Younger (1610–1690), which is in the collection of the Musée du Louvre, Paris (see: https://collections.louvre.fr/ark:/53355/cl010059232).

The impression is strong and well-printed, with vivid, unfaded hand-colouring. The large sheet is in pristine condition, free of tears, holes, folds, abrasions, stains, or signs of handling.

Condition: a richly inked and well-printed impression trimmed along the image borderline and laid upon a support sheet of archival (millennium quality) washi paper. The sheet is in a very good condition.

I am selling this very beautiful engraving (with etching) of a farmers’ market in an early stage of preparation with a resting shepherd and his cattle in the foreground and rural folk enjoying themselves at an inn shown further back—note that my reading, of the scene may be wrong and  is based on my translation of the title: “The Market to Do”—for AU$198 in total (currently US$125.18/EUR126.90/GBP109.99 at the time of posting this listing) including Express Mail (EMS) postage and handling to anywhere in the world, but not (of course) any import duties/taxes imposed by some countries.

“The Monkey Game in the World” (Het Apenspel in de Wereld), c.1650 (1635–68), title plate to the series of six singeries—i.e. images of monkeys portrayed as humans—after David Teniers II (1610–90) (Hollstein 43–48), published by Frans van den Wyngaerde (aka Franciscus van den Wijngaerde; Frans van Wyngaerdt; Wyngart) (1614–79) in Antwerp.

Etching and engraving on laid paper with restorations, trimmed with a narrow margin around the platemark and backed with a support sheet.
