Franz Edmund Weirotter’s etching, “Aqueduct near Monte Testaccio in Rome”, 1766/7

Franz Edmund Weirotter (aka Franz Edmund Weyrotter) (1733–1771)

“Aqueduct near Monte Testaccio in Rome” (aka “Waßerleitung beim Berg Testaccio in Rom”), 1766/7, plate 5 from the series, “Vierte Folge von Verschiedenen Gegenden” (Fourth Episode of Miscellaneous Regions).

Etching on laid paper trimmed with a thread margin around the platemark.

Size: (sheet) 26.4 x 14.4 cm; (image borderline) 15.5 x 13.7 cm.

Numbered in plate below the image borderline: (left) “5”; (centre) “F.E. Weirotter fecit.”

Winterberg 166 (Thilo Winterberg 1998, “Franz Edmund Weirotter, der Landschaftsradierer”, Heidelberg, Galeria Palatina, p. 358, cat. no. 166).

Thilo Winterberg (1998) offers the following description of this print: (transl.) “In the left half of the picture at the well in front of the house, a young man surprises the girl fetching water with a bouquet of flowers.  The man puts his arm on the girl's shoulders and speaks to her.  The house is directly attached to the ruins of the ancient aqueduct.  The water flows from a mask into the trough.  Immediately above, a woman is looking out the window.  In the right half of the picture a man comes down a flight of stairs and seems to be overhearing the couple” (p. 358).

See also the description of this print offered by the British Museum: https://www.britishmuseum.org/collection/object/P_1854-1020-902.

Condition: a richly inked and well-printed impression showing no sign of wear to the printing plate, trimmed with a thread margin around the platemark. Beyond remnant traces of glue marks verso, the sheet is in a very good condition with no tears, holes, folds, abrasions, significant stains or foxing.

I am selling this very fine impression executed by one of the major Austrian printmakers of 18th century, for the total cost of AU$232 (currently US$156.96/EUR150.62/GBP129.56 at the time of this listing) including postage and handling to anywhere in the world, but not (of course) any import duties/taxes imposed by some countries.

If you are interested in purchasing this romantic vision of ancient ruins—note the mini-narrative showing a young man who has brought his lady friend a bouquet of flowers but whose courtship is interrupted by an older man who is being challenged by a woman in a window—please contact me (oz_jim@printsandprinciples.com) and I will send you a PayPal invoice to make the payment easy.

Franz Edmund Weirotter’s etching, “Stone Sarcophagus and Ancient Architectural Fragments”, 1767

Franz Edmund Weirotter (aka Franz Edmund Weyrotter) (1733–1771)

Stone Sarcophagus and Ancient Architectural Fragments” (aka “Steinsarkophag und antike Architekturbruchstűcke”), 1767, plate 2 from the series, “Fifth Series of Different Regions of Old Buildings consists of 24 Sheets” (aka “Fűnfte Folge von Unterschiedlichen Gegenden Alter Gebäude bestehand in 24 Blat”).

Etching on laid paper trimmed around the image borderline with narrow margins.

Size: (sheet) 6.8 x 17.8 cm; (image borderline) 6.6 x 17.6 cm.

Numbered in plate outside the image borderline: (left) “2”.

State i (of i); possibly a lifetime impression (based on the quality of line showing no sign of wear to the printing plate).

Winterberg 175 (Thilo Winterberg 1998, “Franz Edmund Weirotter, der Landschaftsradierer”, Heidelberg, Galeria Palatina, p. 376, cat. no. 175).

Thilo Winterberg (1998) offers the following description of this print: (transl.) “In the left part of the picture there is a rough antique stone sarcophagus next to the fragments of different parts of the building in the middle of the picture. On the right in the foreground two men are sitting on a block of rock and are talking. On the right edge in the distance, you can see a round temple” (p. 376).

Note that the British Museum describes the two men in the foreground at right as “shepherds” (see https://www.britishmuseum.org/collection/object/P_1854-1020-951), but to my eyes, the figures look like infantry men as the left figure has a plumed hat and the right figure seems to be holding a spear with a tasselled point rather than a shepherd’s crook.

Condition: a richly inked and well-printed impression showing no sign of wear to the printing plate, trimmed unevenly around the image borderline with small margins. The sheet is in a near pristine condition with no tears, holes, folds, abrasions, significant stains, foxing or signs of handling.

I am selling this very fine impression in near faultless condition executed by one of the major Austrian printmakers of 18th century, for the total cost of AU$232 (currently US$158.18/EUR151.71/GBP130.69 at the time of this listing) including postage and handling to anywhere in the world (but not, of course, any import duties/taxes imposed by some countries).

If you are interested in purchasing this romantic vision of ancient ruins—note the memento mori (Latin for "Remember that you must die”) symbolism posed by the overgrown massive stone sarcophagus at left and its possible link to the figures (soldiers?) at right—please contact me (oz_jim@printsandprinciples.com) and I will send you a PayPal invoice to make the payment easy.

Franz Edmund Weirotter’s etching, “Near the Great Harbour in Marseille” , c1766

Franz Edmund Weirotter (aka Franz Edmund Weyrotter) (1733–1771)

“Near the Great Harbour in Marseille” (aka “Außer den großen Hafen bei Marseille”), c1766, plate 2 from the series of 12 plates, “Fourth Series of Different Regions” (aka “Vierte Folge von Verschiedenen Gegenden”). Note that the title plate to the series of which this print is a part is inscribed: “nach der Natur gezeichnet in Welschland” ([transl. “drawn from nature in Welschland”) (see https://www.britishmuseum.org/collection/object/P_1854-1020-897). Based on this inscription, the site of this scene is likely to be in the region of French Switzerland (my apologies if my understanding of the region of “Welschland” is incorrect). Possibly published in Basan & Poignant's (fl.1773–88) 1775 edition, “Œuvre De F. E. Weïrotter, Peintre Allemand, Mort à Vienne en 1771. Contenant près de deux cent Paysages & Ruines, dessinés d'après nature, tant en France qu'en Italie, & gravés à l'eau-forte avec beaucoup de goût, par lui-même” (Work of FE Weirotter, German painter, Death in Vienna in 1771. Containing nearly two hundred Landscapes and Ruins, drawn from nature, both in France and Italy, and engraved with etching with great taste, by himself), Paris.

Etching on laid paper with small margins.

Size: (sheet) 17.5 x 24.6 cm; (plate) 14.8 x 21.6 cm; (image borderline) 13.5 x 20.9 cm.

Inscribed in plate below the image borderline: (left) “2”; (centre) “F. E. Weirotter fecit”.

State ii (of ii) with the addition of the artist’s name and plate number below the image borderline and showing the sky area fully executed along with the addition of two three-master ships and a rowing boat in the middle distance (and other additions).

Winterberg 163.II (Thilo Winterberg 1998, “Franz Edmund Weirotter, der Landschaftsradierer”, Heidelberg, Galeria Palatina, pp. 350–51).

The British Museum offers the following description of this print: “Sailing boat in a natural harbour; group of fishermen in the foreground; second plate of the series. 1766/7

Etching” (https://www.britishmuseum.org/collection/object/P_1854-1020-898).

Condition: a richly inked and well-printed impression showing no sign of wear to the printing plate with small margins. The sheet is in near pristine condition with no tears, holes, folds, abrasions, stains, foxing or signs of handling.

I am selling this very fine impression in a near faultless condition executed by one of the major Austrian printmakers of 18th century, for the total cost of AU$228 (currently US$170.89/EUR154.67/GBP130.28 at the time of this listing) including postage and handling to anywhere in the world (but not, of course, any import duties/taxes imposed by some countries).

If you are interested in purchasing this romantic vision of a natural landing nook for fishing boats that to my eyes seems redolent with the grandeur of Piranesi’s vision of ruins, please contact me (oz_jim@printsandprinciples.com) and I will send you a PayPal invoice to make the payment easy.

Note that I have recently listed a remarkable sheet of five of Weirotter's etchings showing a similar fascination with caves (presently still available): https://www.printsandprinciples.com/2022/03/franz-edmund-weirotters-etchings-suite.html

Nicolas Dufour (aka Pierre Charles Nicolas Dufour; Nicolas du Four) (1725–c1818)

“Night View of the Meuse with Fishermen” (aka “Troisieme Vue sur la Meuse”; “IIIème vue sur la Meuse”; “Nachtelijk zicht op de Maas met vissers”), c1770, plate 3 from a series of 4 prints, after a painting by Franz Edmund Weirotter (1733–1771), published in Paris in c1770 by Pierre-François Basan (1723–1797).

Etching on fine laid paper trimmed with a small margin around the image borderline with a flattened publication fold and a faded collector’s inscription (initials) at lower right.

Size: (sheet) 30.6 x 38.3 cm; (plate) 30 x 37.9 cm; (image borderline) 26.5 x 36.6 cm.

Lettered in plate below the image borderline: (left) “Veirotter Pinxit”; (centre) “IIIème Vue sur la Meuse./ A Paris ches Basan.”; (right) “N. du Four Sculp.”

IFF 3 (Jean Adhémar & Jacques Lethève 1954, “Inventaire du Fonds Français après 1800”, vol. 8, Paris, Bibliothèque nationale de France, p. 138, cat. no. 3).

The original vertical publication crease has been flattened, but is still visible; otherwise, the sheet is in a remarkable condition for its considerable age with no tears, holes, significant stains or foxing.
