“Veduta per Angolo dello stesso Candelabro” or “Corner View of the Same Candelabrum” —referencing a related etching of the same candelabrum base viewed from the front [see Wilton-Ely 998], 1778

Technical Details & Condition:

Etching on heavy laid paper with a flattened centrefold, archivally supported on a fine sheet of washi paper. 

This is plate number 104 from the series of 110 plates titled “Vases, Candelabra, Cippi, Sarcophagi, Tripods, Lamps, and Ancient Ornaments Designed and Engraved by Giovanni Battista Piranesi,” initially issued in two folio volumes in 1778. This impression is from the second Paris edition (indicated by the added plate number), published by Ambroise Firmin-Didot (1790–1876) in 1836.

The depicted candelabrum base is located in the courtyard of the Palazzo Lante (also known as Palazzo Medici Lante), near the Church of Sant'Eustachio in Rome. The impression is richly inked, crisp, and well-printed. Aside from the flattened centrefold and minor marks, the sheet is in very good condition, free of tears or significant stains.

“Rear View of the Remains of the Pronaos of the Temple of Neptune, Drawn in the Two Preceding Plates” or “Vue des Restes du Derrière du Pronaos du Temple de Neptune Dessiné dans les Deux Planches Précédentes”, 1778

Regarding the contributions made by both printmakers in the execution of the series, Wilton-Ely (1994) notes: “…the architecture is clearly by Giambattista’s hand, as are the vegetation and fragments. The figure, on the other hand, are somewhat coarse, being awkwardly drawn in a broad outline and rather similar to those in Francesco’s later etched works.” (p. 777)

Technical Details & Condition:
Etching is on heavy wove paper with wide margins, bearing the blind-stamp of the “Regia Calcografia” of 1870, featuring the central emblem of the Savoy shield surmounted by the Royal Crown of Italy. It is plate XIV (14) from the series Différentes vues de quelques Restes de trois grands Edifices qui subsistent encore dans le milieu de l'ancienne Ville de Pesto autrement Posidonia, which translates to Different views of some of the remains of three great edifices that still exist at the centre of the ancient city of Pesto, or Posidonia (Paestum), in Lucania.

The impression is richly inked and nearly faultlessly printed. There are minor marks and stains in the margins; otherwise, the sheet remains in excellent condition for its large size, free of tears, holes, folds, abrasions, or significant stains.

Next to them are the remains C of the internal walls of the/ Cell. D. Remains of two rows of columns that were located in the Cell of the Temple. Cav. Piranesi F.”

Technical Details & Condition:

Etching, engraving, and drypoint with plate tone on heavy wove paper, featuring generously wide margins. This impression was printed around 1870 from the original plate, bearing the seal of the Regia Calcografia (lettered “REGIA CALCOGRAFIA” and “Di ROMA,” with the central emblem of a crown surmounted by a cross) located on the lower-right corner.

This etching is plate 27 from the series “Alcune Vedute di Archi Trionfali ed altri monumenti inalzati da Romani parte di quali se veggono in Roma e parte per l'Italia” (Some Views of Triumphal Arches and other monuments erected by the Romans, some of which are in Rome and some elsewhere in Italy).

The impression is strong and well-printed, showing no signs of wear to the printing plate. The sheet is in near-pristine condition, free from tears, holes, folds, stains, or signs of handling.

“Urns, stelae, and cinerary vases of marble at the Villa Corsini, outside Porta San Pancrazio” (also known as “Urne, cippi, et vasi cenerari di marmo nella Villa Corsini fuori di Porta S. Pancrazio”), 1756.

Plate LVII (57) from the second of four volumes in the series “Le Antichità Romane”, published in Rome. 

This etching was printed from two plates—an upper image plate and a text plate—on heavy laid paper, dated to the early 1760s. It features a watermark with a fleur-de-lys within a double circle, possibly surmounted by the letter “B” (see Wilton-Ely, p. 1161, cat. no. 33). The centrefold from publication, has been flattened and reinforced on the verso with a strip of archival washi paper for stability.
