“Acanthus Leaf” (Feuille d'Acanthe), c1807, Plate 2 possibly from the series of forty plates, “Principes d'ornemens”, published in Paris by Bance aîné (aka Jacques Louis Bance) (1761–1847) in ten notebooks, each containing four plates.

Stipple etching with dot roulette in the crayon manner on wove paper backed with a support sheet.

Size: (support sheet) 43.4 x 56.4 cm; (sheet) 29.5 x 43.1 cm; (plate) 24.7 x 38.8 cm.

Lettered in plate: (lower left) “Dessiné d'après nature et Gravé par Sallembier/ A Paris, chez l’auteur F^g. S^t. Martin, N^o. 77.”; (lower centre) “FEUILLE D'ACANTHE.”; (upper right) “Pl. 2.” (lower right) “Déposé à la Bibliothèque Imp[éri]^ale. En Avril 1807./ et chez Bance ainé Rue S^t. Denis, N^o. 214.”

Condition: a strong impression with margins (approx. 2 cm) laid onto a support of archival (millennium quality) washi paper. Beyond minor handling marks the sheet is in a very good condition with no tears, holes, folds, abrasions, significant stains or foxing.

Soft-ground etching with dot roulette (i.e. “a method of printmaking in which a drawing is made on a sheet of paper on a soft etching ground, pulled off, and the resulting design transferred to the plate by etching” BM) on cream wove paper with wide margins as published.

“Acanthus Leaf Ornaments: Plate 2” (descriptive title only), 1778, after the design by André-Louis Caillouet (fl.c.1778–1817), published from 1778 to 1803—I believe that the earlier editions are printed in sanguine coloured ink and the later editions in black ink—by Jacques François Chereau (1742–1794) in “Principes d'ornemens: contenant les premières esquisses, fleurons, chapiteaux, modillons, frises, vases et autres parties d'architecture” (see the account of this publication offered by the Metropolitan Museum of Art: https://www.metmuseum.org/art/collection/search/712263 and a later edition published by Joubert and printed in black ink available for online viewing/downloading offered by archive.org: https://archive.org/details/gri_33125010924575/page/n35/mode/2up).
