Dirk Stoop, “Stable Scene with Sleeping Dog”, 1651

Dirk Stoop (aka Roderigo Stoop; Rodrigo Stoop; Theodorus Stoop; Thierry Stoop) (1610–c.1686)

“Stable Scene with Sleeping Dog” (TIB title) (aka “The Horseman on the Rearing Horse”; “… un cavalier va au galop vers le fond …”), 1651, the first plate in the series of twelve etchings, “Horses”.

Etching on early laid paper, trimmed with a small margin around the image borderline and backed with a support sheet.

Size: (sheet) 15.1 x 19.8 cm; (image borderline) 14.4 x 18.9 cm.

Inscribed in plate: (within the image borderline at lower right) “D. Stoop f /1651”; (below the image borderline at lower right) “1”.

State iii (of iv) before the addition of the publication details for Frederick de Wit.

The British Museum offers the following description of this print from the final state (iv): “A rearing horse seen from behind to the left, the horseman carrying a sword, other horses with a stable-hand coming out of a stable at centre, a man pulling his boots and sitting against the stable with his dog to the right, another dog lying in central foreground; from a series of twelve prints showing horses. 1651/ Etching” (https://www.britishmuseum.org/collection/object/P_Sheepshanks-3056  [BM Sheepshanks.3056]).

Condition a strong and well-printed impression with small margins around the image borderline. Beyond surface marks, the sheet is in a good condition with no tears, holes, folds, abrasions or significant stains and has been laid onto a support of millennium quality washi paper providing wide margins.

I am selling this marvellous etching that is an early impression printed before the addition of publication details for Frederick de Wit, showing a lively scene featuring a rearing horse and a contentedly scratching dog outside a stable for AU$312 (equivalent to approximately US$199.08, EUR 175.01, or GBP 150 at the time of listing) and includes Express Mail Service (EMS) postage and handling to any worldwide destination. Please note that any import duties or taxes levied by the destination country are the responsibility of the buyer and are not included in the purchase price.
